My Scope

THE SCOPE OF MY RESEARCH:

McLuhan warned of the facets of technology and how it becomes an extension of the self. Thus, from an online perspective, how are our identities shaped, formed, negotiated, presented, cycled and recycled? Are we true to ourselves or rather an extension of what we like to present online? Specifically, I would like to explore how gender and cultural stereotypes might play in the presentation of one’s online identity and the representation of their self. What part of our online identity is authentic? How much of our everyday selves are influenced and dictated by our online selves?
These questions are an area of interest as I tie in diversity and equity issues into the idea of negotiated identities from social media in hopes to pursue this at the post-graduate level.
